EL PASO, Texas (March 15, 2025) – In a wild eight-goal thriller at Southwest University Park, El Paso Locomotive FC played Phoenix Rising FC to an exciting 4-4 draw to remain unbeaten in USL Championship play this season.

A spectacular bicycle kick from Amando Moreno was the highlight of the match for Los Locos who scored four goals for the first time since another 4-4 draw against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC back on August 12, 2022. Moreno scored a pair of goals to give him three in the first two games this year.

Locomotive got off to a flying start as a Beto Avila volleyed home a deflection from a Memo Diaz corner six minutes in. El Paso then doubled their lead as Moreno managed to poke the ball around the keeper to set up his second goal of the season. The visitors would strike right before the half though to cut into the lead.

The second half also started with a bang for the Locos as Gabi Torres steered in a cross from Avila to score against his former club. Jaws then dropped five minutes later as Moreno went acrobatic for a bicycle kick finish to extend the lead for Los Locos. Phoenix was not done, however, as three late goals salvaged them a point in the match.

EL PASO, Texas (March 8, 2025) – El Paso Locomotive FC fought back not once but twice to secure a 2-2 draw against the defending USL champions, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, in the home opener for their 2025 USL Championship season at Southwest University Park.

Late match heroics from Andy Cabrera helped the team capture a point to start the season for the first time since 2021. Amando Moreno opened the scoring for Los Locos for the second consecutive season.

The defending champions started fast as they converted a penalty two minutes into the match. Things were a bit physical through the first 45 minutes with five yellow cards being handed out, one by El Paso and four by the Switchbacks. Los Locos found some momentum before the break, though, as Moreno found the back of the net from the center of the box to even things up at 1-1.

The second half saw El Paso control possession early on and create several chances in the Switchbacks’ half. The visitors held firm, however, and managed to retake the lead off a deflection in the 74^th minute. Los Locos continued to threaten in the closing minutes and finally broke through with an equalizer as Cabrera, who entered as a substitute, scored his first career Locomotive goal to salvage a point for the home side.

• Defender Wahab Achwei started on the back line for the Locos against his former squad for the first time since his departure.

EL PASO, Texas (Oct. 19, 2024) – In the final home match of the 2024 season, El Paso Locomotive FC said goodbye to its fans in electric fashion with a major 2-1 upset victory against Sacramento Republic FC at Southwest University Park.

The win not only snapped a three-match losing streak against the NorCal side but was also a fitting end to the extraordinary careers for two of Locomotive’s most decorated players, defenders Yuma and Eder Borelli.

The Locos strike first, with Stauffer connecting an incredible top-of-the-box volley to record his first Locomotive goal and give El Paso the lead in the 26′. Though Sacramento would equalize minutes later, Locomotive would immediately respond back thanks to a Tony Alfaro goal from the penalty spot in the 32′ to send a massive wave of energy through Southwest University Park.

The second half was just as electric, with both sides banging in shots at goal and both defense holding out strong against the others efforts. Then in the 81′, everyone at Southwest University Park stood up in unison to applaud and say goodbye to the iconic defensive duo that was Yuma and Borelli.

The Locos would hold out its dominant display against the Republic and secure the three points to close out the 2024 home schedule in spectacular fashion.

EL PASO, Texas (Oct. 16, 2024) – In its penultimate home match of the 2024 season, El Paso Locomotive FC fell 2-0 to Orange County SC at Southwest University Park, the first loss in its last six home matches.

“It’s a tough night for us to swallow and we didn’t perform at the level that were performing before,” Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “We have to make sure we’re recovered and we need to come back to be solid, make sure we don’t concede and try to close out the last game of the season here at home with a good result.”

El Paso would find itself down 1-0 Orange County opened the scoring in transition in the 16′ then doubled their lead in the 69′ off a counter-attack. Despite Locomotive’s best efforts, the Orange County backline stood strong to limit the Locos’ scoring opportunities.

Locomotive will now regroup and refocus as they prepare for a quick turnaround against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, October 19, hoping to close out the year at home on a high note.

EL PASO, Texas (Oct. 9, 2024) – Wednesday night saw El Paso Locomotive FC lift its second ever Copa Tejas after rallying from behind to equalize in the final minutes of the match against bitter rivals San Antonio FC.

After a dominant Locomotive first half in which the Locos registered six shots on target and gave up none, El Paso found itself in a difficult situation after going down 2-0 in the second half.

It would take a Kendall Burks own goal in the 83′ to bring the Locos back into the fight and a screamer from the top of the box from El Paso’s Miles Lyons in the 88′ would send Southwest University Park into a frenzy, a nice gift for the defender who celebrated his 22nd birthday the day before.

The final minutes of the match were intense as the Locos fought to get the winner, but the game ultimately ended in a draw to keep the Locos in playoff contention.

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 5, 2024) – In a gritty contest against FC Tulsa, El Paso Locomotive FC held strong to come away with an important 1-0 win to keep itself in playoff contention and further close the points gap in the Western Conference standings. With the victory, the Locos record consecutive wins for the first time this season and remain undefeated at Tulsa’s ONEOK Field in four matches played.

EL PASO, Texas (Sept. 28, 2024) – In a tough battle under the sun’s heat, El Paso Locomotive FC were able to bag a late goal to secure an important win against North Carolina FC at Southwest University Park.

“It was well deserved for us and we needed that [win],” forward Joaquin Rivas said. “The hopes for playoffs are still alive and as long as they are still alive, we’re going to keep pushing no matter what.”

El Paso dominated possession in the first half – holding the ball 63% of the time – to consistently test the North Carolina keeper in the box while also restricting the opponents from getting past the midfield to create opportunities, with the Locos allowing only one shot in the first 45 minutes.

Following the break, North Carolina ramped up its offensive efforts to try and break the deadlock but were unable to get past the Locomotive backline which combined for four won tackles and three interceptions in the second half. The two times North Carolina did manage to get a shot on target, El Paso goalkeeper Jahmali Waite was there to make the save.

With both sides still scoreless heading into the final minutes of the match, Rivas drew a late penalty to give the Locos an opportunity to take the lead. Stepping up for the shot, Rivas would convert from the spot to bag what would be the game-winner.

“[The win was] well deserved against a tough opponent at home,” Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “This is going to give us a boost for what is coming. I don’t know what is going to happen but we need to close the year with good intensity, good mentality and every game at home, we have to play to win.”

Indy would then continue to threaten on goal, but El Paso goalkeeper Jahmali Waite would come up big with a diving save in the 32′ to keep things tight heading into halftime. Indy would then return from the break firing on all cylinders, scoring twice unanswered in the second half to secure a three-goal lead.

Despite best efforts throughout the match, it was not until the 83′ that the Locos found their breakthrough with forward and Las Cruces native Ricardo Zacarias netting in his first goal of the season to give El Paso some hope heading into the final moments of the match.

However, the Indy defense tightened up to prevent a late El Paso comeback and ultimately secured their three points, ending Locomotive’s three-match unbeaten shutout run.

El Paso must now shift focus to its home match next Saturday, September 21 vs Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, with the Locos hoping to avenge their defeat from earlier this season.

EL PASO, Texas (Sept. 7, 2024) – El Paso Locomotive FC played to a 0-0 draw at Southwest University Park on Saturday night, recording a third consecutive result without defeat to pick up a point in the Western Conference standings.

“The past three games that we have played, we haven’t received a goal so that means we’re doing something positive,” Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “We are more solid defensively, but now we need to push and score. We need to continue believing in what we’ve been doing because something is improving in our style of game. I enjoy the way we play – more secure and relaxed – but now we need to push more because if we want to get into the playoffs, we need to get three points every time we are at home.”

The Locos dominated the possession throughout the night, especially in the first half where they held the ball for 62% of the first 45 minutes. The Locos were ever threatening in getting into Detroit’s final third but the visitor backline held strong to keep out the Locos attack.

In net for El Paso, Ramon Pasquel took over the starting spot with Jahmali Waite out on international duty with Jamaica. The Mexican native held his ground against Detroit’s offense, recording four saves on the night.

SEASIDE, California (Aug. 24, 2024) – In a evenly-contested back and forth battle, El Paso Locomotive FC drew 0-0 on Saturday night at Monterey Bay F.C.’s Cardinale Stadium, picking up a point on the road as it aims to continue its 2024 playoff push.

Though Monterey Bay dominated the possession, it was El Paso who was creating opportunities throughout the night. The Locos combined for 18 shots with six on target, but a strong performance from goalkeeper Antony Siaha kept out the El Paso offense.

On the opposite end of the pitch, the Locos defense managed to stay compact enough to limit the hosts to only two shots on target with El Paso goalkeeper Jahmali Waite thwarting those balls away from danger to record a second consecutive clean sheet. Wahab Ackwei was one of the most active defenders for El Paso on the night, recording 10 clearances and going 2-for-2 on tackles to neutralize Monterey Bay’s offensive threats.
