ALL-TIME SERIES
El Paso is set for its fifth-ever meeting against Monterey Bay F.C. (1-2-1), looking for its first win against the NorCal side since a dominant 5-0 home victory in 2022.
The sides last met at Southwest University Park last September, with Monterey Bay managing to steal the three points from El Paso in a 2-1 win.
EL PASO LOCOMOTIVE FC
Despite the result, Locomotive displayed a ton of its potential on Saturday night against Hartford Athletic. Los Locos dominated in possession and created more than double the chances, even managing to find the back of the net on one occasion before the play was ruled offside.
Defenders Lucas Stauffer and Tony Alfaro undoubtedly played a massive role in El Paso’s match plans. Stauffer – who earned a spot in USL Championship’s Team of the Week for his performance – ended the match leading in chances created (5) and final third passes (16) whereas Alfaro registered the most final third entries (13) and successful passes in the opponent half (30) for El Paso. Those numbers help demonstrate their strong ability to trigger offensive transitions from the backline.
“You can see the football and the ideas we have, the quality that we have, it’s all going to come together,” Stauffer said in his post-game Estrella of the Match interview. “We created so many opportunities and [possessed] so much of the ball, but sometimes the other team gets the lucky punch. Luckily, we have another opportunity on Wednesday at home.”
If Locomotive can manage to replicate Saturday’s performance against Hartford and fine-tune the finishing, Monterey Bay’s defense is sure to have a difficult night.
MONTEREY BAY F.C.
Wednesday will be the first match of 2024 for a Monterey Bay side that said goodbye to key players (Christian Volesky, Hugh Roberts, Sam Gleadle) after failing to qualify for the postseason for a second consecutive year.
Forwards Tristan Trager and Luther Archimede were brought in to add sparks up top and experienced Liga MX veteran Carlos Guzman will hope to bring veteran leadership to a backline that was ranked second worst in the Western Conference last season.
Third-year Head Coach Frank Yallop has been trusted with another opportunity to lead the club in search of their first-ever postseason berth, but they’ve got a tough test ahead against a strong Locomotive side hungry to get its first win.
