El Paso Locomotive has already played five matches since the inaugural season opener on March 9th. While the team has begun to find their tune and are looking to stir up the USL Western Conference, another aspect of Locomotive soccer is just leaving the station. The Lil’ Locos program kicked off at the beginning of the month for the East Side, with other groups rolling out later this month.
The Lil’ Locos program offers El Paso and families in the area an alternative to what parents would typically see in the youth soccer world. This fresh perspective is an ode to the hard work and passion that Bob Bigney brings to the table. Bigney serves as the Director of Soccer Operations and has over 30 years’ experience in coaching. He holds his US Soccer “A” License, the National Youth License, and is a certified instructor for US Soccer.
“The Lil’ Locos Program is not team-based and will offer these young children a wonderful first soccer experience. It’s not about winning championships at this young age; but rather learning soccer skills and having fun with friends in a healthy, encouraging environment,” states Bigney. Lil’ Locos is just the beginning of the El Paso Locomotive youth soccer initiatives that the club are rolling out over the next few years.
Lil’ Locos Spring sessions have closed but summer camps and the Fall session of Lil’ Locos are just around the corner. The sessions that parents can expect will have their children placed in small groups and introduced to not only soccer fundamentals, but foundations of teamwork and basic play. Fun is at the core of the model because this is where Bigney sees the most opportunity for connecting with the children and families with soccer as the vessel.
