KEY STORYLINES

In their final home game of the group stage of the USL Jägermeister Cup, El Paso Locomotive FC fell short in a penalty shootout against Phoenix Rising FC 2(7)-2(6). Locomotive fell behind early but responded with goals from Gabi Torres and Andy Cabrera to take the lead at halftime. A rebound from a free kick, however, saw the visitors tie the match and ultimately go on to win in penalty kicks.

El Paso Locomotive FC announced Monday that it has signed forward Christian Sorto for the remainder of the 2025 season. The 25-year-old has seven years of USL Championship experience under his belt with stops at Loudoun United, Orange County SC, Miami FC and Rio Grande Valley FC where he was coached by current Locomotive head coach Wilmer Cabrera. In his USL career including playoffs, he has tallied 14 goals and 14 assists across 137 matches.

This is the final group stage match for Los Locos in the group stage of the USL Jägermeister Cup. If Saturday’s match against Omaha is tied after 90 minutes, the match will go to a penalty shootout with the winner receiving an extra point in the group standings.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

F Beto Avila: After a slow few weeks, Avila was able to get going offensively last Saturday with an early assist and multiple created chances against Phoenix. The Austin, Texas native has five goals and five assists this season across all competitions.

M Gabi Torres: Something about his former club seems to bring out the best in Gabi Torres. He recorded a goal and assist against Phoenix last weekend with his pass to Andy Cabrera giving him seven assists on the season across all competitions, just one shy of the club record held by James Kiffe (8) in 2019.

D Ricky Ruiz: After a few weeks in and out of the lineup, Ruiz looks poised to return to the back line this weekend. He ranks second on the team in interceptions (20) behind the league leader, Gabi Torres (27), and third in tackles (21).

OPPONENT INFO: Union Omaha

In the highest attended home match in club history, El Paso Locomotive FC lost a heartbreaker in 2-1 fashion against San Antonio FC last Friday night at Southwest University Park.

Locomotive were forced to defend early and ultimately let a goal slip by in the 11th minute after a giveaway in the back. El Paso created a few good chances on the counter and held 57 percent of possession but still trailed at the break. Los Locos took control early in the second half with Amando Moreno following up a deflected shot from Frank Daroma to even the match up. An unmarked player after a cleared ball on a set piece, however, was enough for the visitors to walk away with three points.

Andy Cabrera continued his scoring ways bagging a pair of goals to lead El Paso Locomotive FC to a 2-1 road win over Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday night at Cashman Field. Cabrera pushed his monthly total to six goals and his league total to nine as he carried on his recent offensive prowess. Frank Daroma and Beto Avila each chipped in their third assists in league play this season which creates a four-way tie atop the Locomotive leaderboard.

NEW CUP, NEW RULES

This is the second year of the USL Jägermeister Cup after it launched last season in USL League One. Teams were geographically split into six groups that feature six or seven teams. Every club will play four matches, two home and two away. These matches have been built into the regular season schedule which has now been condensed from 34 to 30 matches.

The six group winners advance to the knockout round beginning on August 20. The last two spots in that quarterfinal round will be awarded to the highest scoring teams in group play.

Unlike regular season matches, Jägermeister Cup matches will not end without a victor. If tied after 90 minutes, the match will go to a penalty shootout which promises more excitement to the tournament. Points will be awarded as follows: win – 3 points, penalty win – 2 points, penalty loss – 1 point, loss – 0 points.

In a matchup between the tallest and shortest teams in the USL Championship, the little guys prevailed as El Paso Locomotive FC knocked off Indy Eleven 3-1 on Friday night at Southwest University Park. One could argue he deserves a third as his run to the outside post on an early fast break opened up space for Amando Moreno to start the scoring for Los Locos.

M Eric Calvillo: Calvillo was everywhere for Locomotive last Friday night with his effort paying off resulting in his first goal of the season midway through the first half. He completed 46 of 49 passes including seven in the final third while also winning seven of eight duels and all four tackles he made.

D Arturo Ortiz: Ortiz contributed heavily to the Locomotive attack in the first half, assisting Moreno’s goal before providing a beautiful full-length pass down the right sideline to Cabrera who set up Calvillo for the second of the half. In defense, he also chipped in seven clearances while winning five of seven tackles and completing 56 of 64 passes.
