“Lucky” Alvarez came to the El Paso Animal Emergency Center on the evening of August 4th. He had been seen by his regular veterinarian for a broken leg and was referred for an orthopedic surgery consult.
But, after further x-rays were taken and specialists review, it was made clear that Lucky’s broken leg was due to an aggressive bone cancer. The overnight team worked to keep Lucky as comfortable as possible and discussed options with Lucky’s Mom, a strong and dedicated military wife. That was when she broke the news that Lucky’s dad was deployed and she wanted Lucky to live long enough to see him come home. She wanted Lucky to be able to spend time with him, happily and comfortably.
After conversations with the veterinary team, the decision was made to perform a radical amputation of Lucky’s left hind leg. Lucky’s surgery left him with one less leg, but it never changed his spirit! After a few nights in the hospital, wonderful care from the staff and exceptional commitment from his family, Lucky has made an incredible recovery.
Today, Lucky is spending time soaking up the sun and enjoying his time with both mom and dad and of course his two-legged little brother Maximus. The doctors and staff at the Emergency Center are so grateful to have had the opportunity to help this amazing family. And of course, to treat this exceptional dog Lucky, the pup that never gives up!
